MISSION STATEMENT
Dance Harrison Street is a non-profit community organization which promotes all aspects of dance in educational and theatrical settings. Dance Harrison Street works with local educators to incorporate aspects of dance into curriculum and lives of Eastern Shore students. Its educational mission will be facilitated through workshops and performances.

BACKGROUND
Dance Harrison Street was formed in 1999. Located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore it is the first of its kind in the area. There are many dance schools in the area but the founding board saw that there was a lack of professional influence and role models for the students. Most students have never seen a live performance by a professional dance company. In response, Dance Harrison Street was formed to bring in the professional talent in dance and choreography that is needed to raise the quality and awareness of the art form on the Eastern Shore.

Dance Harrison Street has presented many performances since its inception. The first in conjunction with ClassWorks Dance Studio of Easton, Maryland. Constance Walsh, artistic director, put together a performance at the Governor’s House in Annapolis, Maryland. Frances Glendening, has been promoting arts in the schools and asked the organizations to perform on October 30, 1999.

The second performance was presented in March 2000. Again, the artistic director, Constance Walsh, brought together professional and pre-professional talent from the surrounding area, including Washington DC. The audience was incredibly responsive to the studio performance. They were particularly excited by the quality of the participants and the choreography. Many supporters exclaimed that they were so happy they did not have to travel to the city to see these sorts of performances. Since then DHS has put on several other performances featuring performers like Rasta Thomas and Ashley Canterna.

At present, Dance Harrison Street is seeking serious seed money and funding for special programs. We have survived on grants from The Maryland State Arts Council, the Talbot County Arts Council as well as small donations from local supporters and from donations in kind.
